Donald Trump chooses Ohio Senator JD Vance as 2024 running mate

By Sam Brodey Globe Staff,Updated July 15, 2024

WASHINGTON — Former president Donald Trump has selected Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his 2024 running mate, elevating a hard-edged loyalist who will amplify the polarizing MAGA populism of the Republican ticket.

Trump announced the news in a post on his social media platform “Truth Social” on Monday, as the Republican National Convention was kicking off.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote, citing Vance’s credentials and appeal to Rust Belt states.

In selecting Vance over more establishment-friendly contenders, such as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, shows Trump is going all-in on motivating his core base of supporters rather than appealing to skeptical voters in the center.

Author of the memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance entered political life as a Trump apostate — who once wondered in a leaked 2016 conversation with a friend if Trump would behave like Hitler — before pivoting to becoming a Trump apostle and a hero of his supporters.

In 2022, Vance won a contested US Senate election powered by Trump’s endorsement. Since then, Vance has frequently defended Trump through the former president’s legal battles and aligned with him closely in advocating for an America First isolationism and stridently right-wing positions on social issues.

In recent months, Vance has publicly endorsed Trump’s effort to contest his 2020 defeat by sending “alternative slates” of presidential electors, now the substance of criminal charges in several states, and said on CNN he is “extremely skeptical” that former vice president Mike Pence’s life was in danger on January 6, 2021.

Vance also took a particularly charged stance after the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday, blaming the left for their rhetoric (without any evidence of the shooter’s motivations) in contrast with Trump’s own more moderated response.

“Today is not just some isolated incident,” Vance wrote on the social media platform X. “The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Behind the scenes, Vance has cultivated a formidable list of allies in Trump’s orbit, growing close in particular to his eldest son, Donald Trump, Jr., who is also an influential adviser to the former president.

Vance had long been considered a top contender for the Republican vice presidential nod. Also reported to be in the running were Burgum, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, all of whom were seen as figures who could appeal to voters in the center and to demographics targeted by the Trump campaign, like Black and Latino voters.

At 39 years old, Vance is the youngest running mate in the modern era since Richard Nixon, who was also 39 when he was selected as Dwight D. Eisenhower’s running mate. His youth is a stark contrast to Trump, who at 78 years old would be the oldest person ever inaugurated as president if he were to win another term in November.
